The Second Conference of St. Christopher’s

In considering important events it is suprising that I should write of the second conference. Such was the devastating effect of the Second World War on events that the only references I have refer to the failure in 1939 of the first conference and the absence of minutes and official reports. However ,”All sections of St. Christopher’s were united as far back as 1939 when the handbook was published after the rally at Buxton”.

Happily more information is available on the second conference; confirmation of the letter from Ron Carey, Southampton, to Terry Chappe, London; Agenda item 3 for the second conference of St. Christopher’s to be at Newcastle, Staffs., Easter read as follows; “Discuss and formulate a sound basis for the nationalization or union of all sections” Terry Chappe . Hon. Sec.

Catholic cyclists had travelled from all over the country to the Potteries where theN. Staffs. club played host.

Birmingham, Leeds,  North Staffs.

Bolton,  Liverpool,  Nuneaton

Burnley, London,  Southampton

Glasgow,  Manchester, Kidsgrove,

Newcastle on Tyne

There was obviously a great deal of discussion as to what the National Club should take as , Father Dawson , North Staffs. had proposed “to federate the sections of St. Christopher’s, not to nationalize them.” Nationalization was proposed by London, seconded by Glasgow and carried.
