National St. Christopher's Catholic Cycling Club

Club Rally and Inter City 25

Although the National Club was not formed until 1946 there were many joint meetings of sections around the North Midlands in 1938. North Staffs. organised the first Inter-City 25 miles time trial on a course near Nantwich in 1939.

After the Second World War significant efforts were made to revive the National Club. Many meetings were arranged between sections and these would take the form of rallys. Social in character with particular emphasis on the family. Together with tea and sandwiches games would be organised, egg and spoon, sack, three legged and slow bicycle races were popular. The more athletic would take part in running but the serious competition would take place in the 25 mile time trial. The day would be rounded off by a ride to Benediction at a local church and later for the seniors a pint at the pub.

Inter City Events and Early Rallys

These events were organised in different parts of the country at different times in the year. They were supported by enthusiastic riders who would cycle hundreds of miles in a weekend to meet their friends. In this way the idea of the National Catholic Cycling Club emerged and resulted in the promotion of the National Easter Rally.

In 1946 Ron Carey Southampton organised an open 50 mile time trial on a Southampton course. It was supported by four other St Christopher's riders, R Lilley Southampton 2'23'16", J. Kelly Manchester 2'28"7", P. Murray London 2'46"18", G McCaffrey London, D.N.F.
